CIPD Assignments: What Stayed, and What Changed in 2026/27 Cohorts

Assessor’s Note

“The 2026/27 CIPD assessment cycle does not require students to throw away everything they learned previously. It requires them to stop assuming that last year’s assessment is this year’s assessment.”

The 2026/27 CIPD assessment cycle is now underway. Yes, it’s applicable to you HDTC (Turkey) cohort also! But don’t panic: the core units, learning outcomes, and assessment criteria remain broadly consistent with the earlier CIPD Profession Map. You’ve by now noticed that CIPD assessment cycle changes often linger on case scenarios, AC questions, task requirements, evidence expectations, or assessment mechanics. This article focuses on CIPD assignments: changes, what stayed, and what 2026/27 cohorts should know before signing up.

DON’T COPY OLD ASSIGNMENTS!

A 2025/2026 assignment for the same unit may no longer match the assessment you’ll meet in the 2026/2027 cycle!

Changes Made in CIPD Assessments for 2026/27

The changes didn’t birth a completely new CIPD syllabus for 2026/27. Instead, the annual assessment cycle refreshed circumstances under which you’ll demonstrate already-established professional knowledge. It’s like adjusting the time, ingredients, or an oven for The Great British Bake Off. Here’s what to expect from the current 2026/27 assignment briefs:

Changes in Case Scenarios

I repeat: DON’T build an assessment around an old PDF simply because it has the same unit code. The following insider information summarises approved changes in case scenarios for CIPD Level 5 & 7:

  • 5CO01: Artiron Motors, a multinational automotive manufacturer working towards carbon net zero, replaces Calmere House
  • 5CO02: The new one is Camellia (including quantitative employee survey data) from the 2025/2026’s Technivara scenario
  • 5CO03: Plyton, a manufacturing organisation, took the pie from Nexxobyte
  • 5HR01: AnchorBridge excluded a “newly-merged public sector organisation” (See the attached FREE CIPD 5HR01 – 2025 assignment template)
  • 5HR02: In comes Clyssan, byebye ParcelCare
  • 5HR03: Mercy Frontier takes over from GreenFriendlyEco / GA Pensions
  • 7CO02: Essona is the new kid on the CIPD block
  • 7LD03: HypeShift, a growing employee-owned marketing and digital design agency with 180 employees in Manchester and Liverpool

Important Point

You’ll still have to work with what the assignment brief from your centre says, regardless of the above changes. Read more here.

Get Ready for Heavier Application at CIPD Level 5

Several current Level 5 assessments demonstrate that CIPD assignments are not simply knowledge essays. For example, 5CO02 requires students to work with evidence and data extracts from a pulse survey involving 46 employees – so you’ll now need to:

  • Interpret quantitative information
  • Present or analyse data
  • Explain what the evidence means
  • Support claims with appropriate sources
  • Connect conclusions to the scenario
  • Make recommendations

Similarly, 5CO01 requires students to show concrete application of people practice concepts to the Artiron Motors scenario.

What Stayed the Same?

There is considerable continuity in the current qualification structures. So don’t assume that a new case organisation means you have to relearn the entire unit. For example, there isn’t any change of ACs, Word Count, or Case Scenarios in the CIPD Level 3 syllabus! Also, the CIPD rules on what counts as content words and the 10% legroom remained (words inside tables count, for example)

CIPD Level 5

Level 5 (People Management) continues to include:

  • 5CO01 Organisational performance and culture in practice
  • 5CO02 Evidence-based practice
  • 5CO03 Professional behaviours and valuing people

The People Management pathway continues with:

  • 5HR01 Employment relationship management
  • 5HR02 Talent management and workforce planning
  • 5HR03 Reward for performance and contribution

CIPD Level 7

Level 7 kept the core structure including:

  • 7CO01: Work and working lives in a changing business environment
  • 7CO02: People management and development strategies for performance
  • 7CO03: Personal effectiveness, ethics, and business acumen
  • 7CO04: Business research in people practice

Word Count: Don’t Make Assumptions!

Word counts remain assessment-specific.

Examples from current public copies are:

  • 5CO01 is now at 4,550 words long
  • 5CO02 has some 3,900 words
  • 5HR01 = 3,900 words (3,510 – 4,290 words)
  • 7CO02: approximately 4,000 words, with regulated spread across the four responses.

VERY IMPORTANT

A 3,900-word assessment does not necessarily mean you are writing a 3,900-word essay. Some assignments divide available words across several questions. Others include calculations, reflections, data analysis or practical activities with specific word-count rules. Always confirm the actual word count with the brief!

Plan Before Writing Level 7 Assignments

Some Level 7 assessments will require informed selection before you write the first word. For instance, the current CIPD 7CO02 assessment demands the learner to answer four questions chosen from a list in each of the four learning outcomes. 7CO03 similarly requires four responses, with one assessment criterion selected from each learning outcome. Your plan should therefore include:

  • Reading all question / criteria choices first
  • Identifying where you have the strongest evidence
  • Counter-checking exactly what each criterion requires of you
  • Planning sources before committing to a response
  • Writing

STUDENT NOTICE

7CO04 (Business Research in People Practice) is fundamentally a research project, not the usual case-study assignment

Henceforth, AI is Part of Assessment Conversations!

Depending on the unit, CIPD centres aren’t treating AI as a simple “allowed” or “banned” issue. You’ll notice the current 3CO04 assessment comes with a controlled activity requiring learners to use an AI tool and generate appointment / non-appointment letters. Yes, AI sanctioned by none other than your CIPD centre! But before someone gets over-excited, AI is only part of assessment design. The assignment brief determines what is permitted for which AC. Very different from unrestricted use of AI to write an assignment: the 20% rule for GPT content still catches them lazybones!

6 Cardinal AI Usage Rules

  • Read those AI instructions in the current brief
  • Follow the AI usage limitations for a specific assessment that allows it
  • Do not assume any other unit has identical AI usage rules
  • Last year’s AI instructions may not apply, but the 20% rule didn’t go anywhere!
  • Keep evidence where the assignment brief specifically requires it
  • Never use AI to manufacture sources or references. I shouldn’t even tell you how high an academic crime this is!

Avoid These Shortcuts

Want to stay out of REFER grades? There’s two ways: Place an Order with us today, or if you decide to combat the assignment solo then avoid these shortcuts:

  • Downloading a 2025/26 assignment and changing the company name – dumb, isn’t it?

Practical Lesson

Don’t write a generic HR textbook answer then namedrop the case organisation in “strategic” sentences. CIPD assessors want to see and feel the scenario influencing your submission throughout!

  • Using an old case study because the unit code is identical – too lazy to read the whole brief, and equivalent to relying on old guidance instead of checking the new one
  • Assuming changed questions mean changed assessment criteria. That’s classical definition for stupid!
  • Treating every CIPD assessment as a conventional essay. No they’re not, mate!
  • Ignoring calculations, practical activities, or reflective components (aka setting your exam and writing it)
  • Writing generic answers with minimal scenario application churns the stomach of every other assessor on this planet
  • Assuming an AI rule from one unit applies to another

Leaving assessment-criteria mapping until the end is in a class of its own, couldn’t mix it with anything up there!

Your 2026/27 CIPD Assignment Checklist

  • Get the current assessment brief from your study centre
  • Confirm the assessment ID and version
  • Read every question before researching
  • Identify the relevant learning outcomes and assessment criteria
  • Note the exact word-count rules for each AC
  • Identify whether the assessment answers a case-study question, workplace scenario, dataset analysis, professional review, reflective activities, research project, or a practical activity
  • Check the AI instructions
  • Build your research around the actual questions, applying theory and evidence to the scenario where required
  • Check that every assessment criterion is met before submitting. Use the current brief – not an old assignment – as a final authority

Final Pro Tip

Do not apply one writing formula to every CIPD unit. First understand the assessment architecture of your specific unit.
